Manley breach earns year ban

CROSS Keys backs coach Dai Manley is the latest victim of the WRU's hard, no-nonsense stance on abuse of referees after being slapped with a 12-month ban from the touchlines.
Manley (pictured) will not be able to enter the playing enclosure at senior matches until February 18, 2009, after his verbal sparring with referee Hugh Watkins following Keys' defeat to Cardiff at the Arms Park last month.
The coach, who joined Keys last summer, has suffered the same fate as Pontypridd's Dale McIn-tosh, who was punished for a tirade after a clash with Glamorgan Wanderers.
"I've just got to take it on the chin," said Manley.
"I'm disappointed with the whole thing but it won't really affect my role at the club."
The WRU have clamped down on the intimidation of officials this season with a raft of clubs seeing individuals banned or fines dished out after breaching the code of conduct.
At the latest committee meeting Brynmawr have seen their touch judge banned from the playing enclosure for two years after an incident against Aber-gavenny.
Ferndale were also fined £500 with £250 suspended after a supporter abused the referee.
While obviously it is an episode that Keys would rather had not happened, and they have been fined £1,000 with £500 suspended for 12 months, the punishment will not affect them on the playing front.
Manley usually sits in the stands anyway, is in constant radio contact with the rest of the coaching team, and possesses a shout to bark orders that even the winger on the far touchline cannot escape.
It is the second time that the former Pontypool winger has been brought before the disciplinary committee after running into trouble with the referee - he was sent to the stands by Nigel White-house when the Pandy Park outfit won at Ponty earlier in the season.
Abertillery BG'S Lee Bowden has been banned for two weeks for stamping against Gwern-yfed.
He will be able to resume playing on March 4
