Abertillery BG take Cardiff HSOB's to the cleaners

Abertillery BG welcomed National league division 4 south east opponents Cardiff HSOB to the park for a friendly fixture on Saturday and came away with emphatic win by a margin of 54 points to five.

On a cold and windy November afternoon when many supporters could have been expected to stay at home and watch the many sporting attractions on the box, the home team decided to put on a running rugby exhibition that was on occasions out of the top draw. Indeed within minutes of the kick-off the first points were conjured up when the Abertillery backs ripped their opposite numbers apart leading to a Darren Miles try which he also converted. All fairness to the Cardiff team they stuck to their task and camped in the Abertillery half for the next fifteen minutes without particularly looking like scoring, however a try did come when they put through a speculative kick that was fumbled by two Abertillery defenders leading to a fortuitous unconverted try.

This setback seemed to spur the green and whites on and it was not long before good work by the forward unit released their irrepressible backs for wing Damion Attwell to run in a try converted by Darren Miles. Five minutes later Darren Miles once again broke the hearts of the Cardiff defence when he ran in his second converted try.

HT 21 - 5

The second half saw the fitter Abertillery team really 'go to town' scrum half Luke Peglar kicked a raking ball from deep in his half for wing Aled Penn to follow up well putting the opposition fullback in all sorts of trouble, centre Ian Williams took advantage of the loose ball offered to run in from twenty five metres. It was another fifteen minutes before Abertillery troubled the scoreboard again when the irrepressible Darren Miles took the 'old boys' to the cleaners when he left their defence for dead and ran over half the length of the field to score his third try that once again he converted. Scores now came at regular intervals as the opposition were now totally demoralised, firstly fullback Matthew Burrows scored a try, followed by a second Ian Williams try and a forth try for Darren Miles all converted by Miles leaving the Green and Whites with an emphatic win.

Abertillery BG travel to Rhymney next Friday to play the division 3 east team in a friendly.

Thank you for that comprehensive and in-depth match report.

Whilst only a friendly match, it's important for team spirit and practice that games such as these are taken seriously for the future.

Without this forum facility, how would I, living in France, ever know how the Green & Whites got on?

Thanks again.
