Aber topple table toppers...... (incl. photo link)The green and whites finally came good yesterday and played to their potential.
For the first time this season the lads showed that they are capable of more than holding their own with any team in the division, right from the start they showed their intent taking a 9-3 lead through penalty goals from Darren Miles and Geraint Langdon and a dropped goal by Gareth Edwards, Nantyglo's only response was a penalty from the boot of Richard Powell.
Then came the coup-de-grace with Abertillery in free flow a brace of tries from barn storming wing Aled Penn, the second showing superb power and pace.
Aber led into the half time interval by 19-3 and a major win was in prospect, however we wobbled and Nantyglo took advantage when they replied with two tries by Steven Coles and Kristian Knapp each converted by Richard Powell. Nantyglo were now in the ascendancy with the home team now holding only a two point lead. Dropped goal attempts by Richard Powell and Jason Williams failed to find the mark and Abertillery gradually dragged themselves back into the game.
As the clock inched its way to the full time whistle outside half Geraint Langdon struck the all important penalty goal which dictated that Nantyglo could no longer win with a single kick and left Abertillery worthy winners and back on track.
Every player upped his game yesterday and it was visibly apparent prior to kick off that the players wanted this win to prove a point. The packs performance was the best show this term and the backs showed some fine attacking moves while a high number of tackles were made.
Photographs are available as usual, however as I was stuck in the stand on the tannoy not to my usual standard or variety......
