Suport

I am an elderly distant exile Vice President who has only managed one visit to The Park in the last two years. I recognised that we have a young team which lacks the physical power to match many of their opponents. However, I also recognised that they are a team of local lads who play with a good level of skill and enthusiasm who deserve the support of local rugby enthusiasts. It is therefore dissapointing to note that following this season's lack of success interest in the team appears to have died and that this site no longer attracts any comment or criticism. It also takes a couple of days before anyone bothers to publish the match result. Sad !

Jim -I have to disagree with you regarding publishing the match result. As the person who runs the main site, the very latest it goes up for league matches is early on Sunday morning and most often it is Saturday evening when I return from the game. The only exceptions to that are when I am away or there is a technical difficulty. The match report is usually posted online the same time as the match result although sometimes it is slightly later - it has to go to the local newspaper on a Sunday morning (or Saturday eve).

As far as the online analysis is concerned I think you are dead right. The number of people who contribute to the board has diminished and that's not just this season. I agree that more supporters should be getting involved. However, even when we were pushing for promotion last season, it was the same. Support at the Park is usually good with a hard core - better than any other side in this divsion I would say and I suspect we are the only club in Div 3 east that regularly runs a supporters' bus for away games.

Interest online or in person is not going to be what is was when we were in the top couple of divisions, say ten years ago. But interest in Welsh club rugby has waned in terms of the attendance figures everywhere. With so many other attractions to compete with, rugby and non-rugby, especially this time of year, it's a hard task to get those other than the hard core along.

Thanks for your continued support online by the way and I know you try to get along to games when in Aber.

Quite right Jim, I'm one of the guilty ones who hasn't been on the forum for a while. I often sign on to read other peoples gripes etc so I should  try to rectify the matter and submit more myself.

Another guilty supporter I'll try harder in future. Lets all stay positive and realise the huge steps we've made just to get where we are there's still plenty of time this season to gain safety in the division

Sometimes it seems that I'm the only one contributing to the site so lets all get together and make a vibrant community once again

Communications

Smile Having been a fairly prolific contributor in the past, Ifeel I should respond to this current surge of activity.

Firstly in response to the criticism that the site is slow in posting results and match reports. In my opinion nothing could be further from the truth!
The service is excellent with the reports well written.

One area that could be improved upon is off the field news which is important to the club. For example, changes in coaching personnel and players leaving close season. If we are going to attract more traffic on this forum then these are important news items which should be aired.

In terms of the season so far its obvious we are missing big experienced forwards. We are getting " bossed " out of the ruck and contact areas far to easily. Our second rows do not have the physicality to lock out the scrums, and we have lost confidence in the backs. Nevertheless the team is young with full of enthusiasm and promise. If we can grind out a few more wins like last Saturday we should avoid the drop.

Let's all get behind the team they deserve our support.

Chopping and changing

Whilst I agree with Graham about the impact of not having a bigger pack I'm more concerned that we don't seem to have settled choices in the backs.

I've seen Chris, Gareth and Darren all play there this year and I think the best combination has been Chris at 10, Gareth centre and Darren at 15. When we changed to that system at h/t at Pill we looked much more settled and confident. I think we should try to keep the changes to a minimum to allow the backs to settle.

As for the line out, this was one of our best assets over the last two seasons but seems to have gone off the boil lately. Shouldn't we concentrate on accurate throwing and timing of the jump as opposed to the complicated things we've been trying lately?

I hope this doesn't sound too negative as I'm not trying to knock the boys who give their best every game. I just hope we can get a more settled side and let confidence stem from that as I'm sure that we are more than capable of taking points off the teams around us.

Let's generate some interest in 2009

Yet another to put his hand up, although never a regular contributor I have been known to pen the odd line, I am however a regular visitor to the site and find it invaluable keeping me updated with the results and how the team are doing.

I will endeavour to be a little more active in the future. I however agree with Graham that a little more insight to the thoughts of the committee and the short and long-term vision for the club would certainly stimulate interest and generate discussion.

While still running around the rugby fields of Wales inserting my whistle into unmentionable orifices, I do not get down the park as often as I would like.  However, I did manage a visit on the 13th to see the Cwmbran game, while it was not the greatest advert for 3rd division rugby Aber's defence was excellent and with a little more confidence a few more tries could certainly have been scored.

I had the pleasure of visiting Pill Harriers on Saturday for the 4th round of the cup, although beaten by 41 points by Tredegar they gave a very good account of themselves, and certainly got stuck in. 5 yellow cards did calm things down ever so slightly!!

They were rough and tough up front, and as they are in the same league as Aber this is the sort of opponent Aber will face from the 3rd Division upwards, I am sure that with an increase in confidence that a few more wins will bring Aber will be up there rocking and rolling with the best.

Hope you all enjoy your Christmas Festivities, and if you want to run it off the Old Tyleryans will be holding their Annual Past/Present Over 50 v Under 30 game on the Rose Heyworth field on Boxing Day, KO when you can get there, or about “Noonish” and a get-together in the Club room at the Corner Club in the afternoon, all are welcome. Our large screen will be showing the Dragons v Blues game.
